The things you learn when you’re not even trying. Have you ever heard of Donkey Baseball? I hadn’t, until recently. One of the people I follow on Twitter shared a link to a video of people playing Donkey Baseball. (Here’s another You Tube video in case you want a good laugh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55-gHj7yxg0).
In case you don’t know, Donkey Baseball is baseball, only the players are people riding donkeys. Donkeys, in case you don’t know this either, are stubborn animals not known for being team players – they have minds of their own and will simply refuse (that means stop dead and stay in the same spot no matter what) if you try to make them do something they don’t feel like doing. If you keep on trying, or if the donkey is feeling especially cantankerous that day, they might kick and buck. In short, donkeys do not make good baseball players. But the resulting games can be amusing – not to the human players, and certainly not to the donkeys – but for the audience.
I don’t know why donkey baseball tickled me, but it did, and I started asking people if they’d ever seen or participated in such a game. Imagine my surprise when my 91-year-old father told me that his father was the coach of a donkey baseball team, back in the early 1920s. “Wow,” I said, “Really – the coach? What does a donkey coach do?” Dad laughed and said it mostly meant that Grandpa shoveled all the donkey crap, as well as swearing at the donkeys. Grandpa’s team was made up of testosterone-laden human members of the small Idaho community where they lived, and they traveled around to other small towns playing pick-up games. Whole towns turned out to watch. I don’t know if people had to bring their own donkey, or where the donkeys came from. But I remember my grandfather being quite cantankerous and stubborn himself, so I bet he made a great donkey coach. I wish I could have been there to see. But since this fine tradition is still going on, perhaps I should be a donkey baseball coach myself. I can shovel crap and swear, just as good as anyone else.
